Most Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a POC
Click on a frequently asked question to find an answer.
What is a Point of Contact (POC)?
A POC will be the primary contact between the
law firm and the Court for matters concerning CM/ECF. The
POC need not be an attorney, and can be anyone at the firm,
including a managing clerk or information technology person.
More than one POC may be designated at a single firm.
What are the goals of the POC program?
The POC program is intended to facilitate communication
between the Court and the bar and to ease the transition
to CM/ECF. The POC will provide law firms with an in-house source for
issues and questions relating to CM/ECF that may arise. The POC will
also make it easier for the Court to communicate with CM/ECF users
by providing a single point of contact at each law firm. Feedback from
POC’s will enable the Court to improve the efficiency of CM/ECF.
What benefits will you receive by joining the POC program?
Having a POC within your firm will make your
work easier and provide better service to clients. While
the Court will provide a telephone help desk during business hours,
the POC will be an in-house source of aid for CM/ECF users. The POC
will be able to answer follow-up questions after training and to trouble
shoot basic CM/ECF issues. POC’s will be the first to receive news
concerning CM/ECF, including changes to the program, updated manuals
and training materials, and service interruption notices. This means
less time spent on the fine points of the CM/ECF program and more time
spent servicing your clients’ needs.
What are the POC’s Responsibilities?
Coordinate Registration of Attorneys for CM/ECF
- In order to file documents electronically, an attorney must not only
be admitted to practice before the bar of this Court, he/she must also
be a registered CM/ECF user. The POC can help the registration process
in the firm by assisting attorneys in completing the form on-line;
maintaining a list of users’ passwords and protecting those passwords
by reporting any breaches of password security.
Coordinate CM/ECF Training - The POC can sign up for
ECF training classes at www.nysd.uscourts.gov,
and then return to the firm to train others. The POC will
be available in-house to answer follow up questions after training.
If necessary, the POC can schedule formal CM/ECF training at the courthouse.
New versions of CM/ECF will be periodically adopted to incorporate
improvements to the program. The POC will be notified of these changes
and will be able to update users.
Act as a CM/ECF "Help Desk" - CM/ECF is not difficult to use. If you
can use the Internet, then you can use CM/ECF. The POC will
be trained to trouble shoot basic issues with the program, and provide
on site help to your firm. If the problem cannot be solved internally,
then the POC can call the Court’s CM/ECF telephone help desk during
business hours. The POC will also receive instant e-mail notification
from the Court of any problems or interruptions in CM/ECF service and
will be able to pass that news to users.
